Took oath of allegiance there on June 12, 1865. 23 years old, 5'-7" tall, blue eyes, light hair, light complexion. Born in Dover, Missouri April 1, 1840. Died January 23, 1914. Buried in the Culp-Kirkland Cemetery near Highway 241 between Tumbleton and Oaky Grove, Henry County, Alabama. He was the son of Dr. William A. Culp and Cynthia Smith Culp - both from South Carolina.
CULP, WILLIAM B. (1 Lt.)
Civilian occupation: lawyer. Volunteered as a private and helped occupy Fort Morgan until he came into the service of the 46th Alabama Infantry as a 1st Lt. Enlisted February 21, 1862 in Montgomery by Capt. Powell. From August 1862 to March 1863 he acted as Chief of the Signal Corps attached to Gen. Stevenson's Division of the Army of Mississippi. Thrown from a horse he suffered a compound fracture of the left leg. Unable to perform field duty, he was appointed Judge Advocate. He was recommended for this position by the Governor of Alabama and all of the Alabama Supreme Court Justices. Captured July 4, 1863 at Vicksburg and paroled July 10, 1863. Died March 8, 1864. His wife Nancy Culp applied for a claim against the C.S.A. government for that owed him at his demise.
